Calling all young aspiring story book authors and illustrators – the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) WA branch is still running its annual Make Your Own Story Book Competition. It is open to WA students from pre-primary to Year 8 and closes on Friday 5 June 2020.

To help you give yourself the best chance at winning, Fremantle Press author/illustrator Sean E. Avery has created a series of videos on his YouTube channel that covers the step-by-step process of writing, drawing and assembling your own story book. These videos cover brainstorming, story book building, illustrating characters, book layout, book binding and more. He even talks about the necessary tools you need in your ‘writer’s tool kit’ to succeed as an author.

Sean is the author of Harold and Grace and All Monkeys Love Bananas. He is an internationally acclaimed sculptor, author and illustrator best known for his animal sculptures made from CDs and electronic waste, some of which are featured in Scitech (Perth) and Ripley’s Believe it or Not! (USA) exhibitions. He has presented at various writers festivals and represented Australia at the International Waste To Art exhibition in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2014.  Head to his channel to watch the rest of the videos in his CBCA WA Make Your Own Story Book Competition series.

Sean E. Avery’s books, Harold and Grace and All Monkeys Love Bananas, can be purchased in all good bookstores and online.
