Local writers, bookish chat and finding your next favourite read: don’t miss your chance to secure a ticket for the Fremantle Press Great Big Book Club
Fremantle Press is delighted to partner with the City of Cockburn’s Success Library to bring you the 2022 Fremantle Press Great Big Book Club on Saturday 23 July. Spend the afternoon among friends and fellow booklovers to discover your new favourite story and meet the author who wrote it.
Hosted by Fogarty Award winner Brooke Dunnell, award-winning author Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes and Fremantle Press publisher Georgia Richter, the afternoon will feature eight established and debut authors across three panels – one for historical fiction buffs, one for crime readers and one for literary fiction lovers.
Karen Herbert, Michael Levitt and Leigh Straw will discuss crime secrets and snippets in their books The River Mouth, The Cast Aways of Harewood Hall, The Gallerist and The Ballroom Murder. Then Sharron Booth, Portland Jones and David Whish-Wilson will chat about writing and researching historical fiction in relation to their new books The Silence of Water, Only Birds Above and The Sawdust House. And don’t miss Maria Papas (Skimming Stones) and Chemutai Glasheen (Unlimited Futures) talking about literary fiction and speculative visionary fiction.
After the panels, guests will have the opportunity to meet the authors, buy their books and have them signed.
Book clubs are an important part of most authors’ worlds – not only as a way to find out what readers want in a story, but also as a way to expand their own literary knowledge. Karen Herbert extolled the virtues of her local book club and said it, ‘has expanded my reading by introducing me to books I never would have picked up off the shelves.’
Brooke Dunnell, whose debut novel, The Glass House, will be launched in November, said, ‘Book clubs are a great way to learn what other readers think and get different viewpoints on our favourite stories. Plus, there’s cake and coffee – what’s not to love?’
