Own a piece of WA culture with this set of three ‘Wonky Baskets’ by Sally Morgan, one of Australia’s most celebrated Indigenous artists and storytellers. Handcrafted from raffia and recycled yarn (sourced online and from secondhand shops), each basket is made by embroidering the yarn and raffia together, then finished with bright, hopeful colour.
Sally Morgan is best known for her groundbreaking memoir My Place (1987), a landmark work that brought an Aboriginal family story into the national conversation and has sold more than a million copies worldwide. These baskets carry that same spirit of truth-telling and humanity. Sally calls them wonky because the first ones she taught herself to make were imperfect, and she came to love what that imperfection represents: our flawed world, and our shared striving to be better.
Details from these baskets were photographed by First Nations X and printed on a fundraising T-shirt supporting Aboriginal children. Baskets have also been gifted to visiting First Nations entrepreneurs from the USA at the US Consul in Perth.
Heights of baskets vary between 14 – 19 cm. Valued at $400.
