The Fogarty Literary Award is proudly sponsored by the Fogarty Foundation, Fremantle Press and the Centre for Stories. The prize is biennial and is awarded to an unpublished manuscript by a Western Australian author aged between 18 and 35 for a work of adult fiction, narrative non-fiction or young adult fiction. The winner receives a cash prize of $20,000 and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press.

About the book
The queer YA novel Glimmers in the Sea Glass takes us from the oppressive silence of small towns to the locked wards of a children’s hospital, immersing us in the lives of two young protagonists separated by twenty years. This engrossing page-turner pulls the reader deep into the heart-wrenching, heartwarming rollercoaster lives of its characters.
About the author
Chuckie Raven (they/them) is a youth worker and craftsperson living in Nollamara, WA. They’re the founder and lead of the Perth Pride Shed, Perth’s first LGBTQIA+ community shed. They are passionate about protecting queer kids and, through their work with The Freedom Centre, have met many brilliant young minds who give them endless hope for the future. Chuckie writes stories they wished they’d had growing up. Their debut novel Glimmers in the Sea Glass is born out of their own queer experience and their family’s experience of living in WA’s South West.
PAST WINNERS
The 2023 winner of the Fogarty Literary Award was Katherine Allum for The Skeleton House (June 2024). The 2021 winner was Brooke Dunnell for her manuscript The Glass House (November 2022). The inaugural winner was Rebecca Higgie for her manuscript The History of Mischief (September 2020).

Entries open on Friday 15 January 2027 and close at 11.59 WST on Sunday 28 February 2027.
ANNOUNCEMENT
The winner will be announced at a special event at Government House on 13 May 2027.

All submissions are to be made electronically. Before commencing your submission please carefully read the terms and conditions. Also make sure you have a 100-word biography, a provisional title for your work and that you know the word count of your manuscript. Please note: if you are shortlisted for this prize, proof of your age and of your current Western Australian residency will be required.
