Brian Simmonds (1938 – 2025) was the artist behind the classic Lighthouse saga by Dianne Wolfer and collaborated with Fremantle Press for 17 years, with books including The River, The Beach and Rottnest.
The boat print is featured on page 66 of Lighthouse Girl as Stan drops anchor beside the jetty, bringing extra rations for Christmas and Say hums carols.
The beautiful illustration of Fay and her father is a draft and wasn’t printed in the final copy of Lighthouse Girl.
Author Dianne Wolfer says, ‘I loved sharing the four book Light series journey with Brian. When we gave presentations together, he sketched while I shared the story background. Like me, the audience was spellbound, watching Brian’s charcoal drawings bring the story to life. When anyone said he made it look easy, Brian replied, “It’s taken 50 years of practise to make it seem that way!” Sadly, Brian is gone, however his beautiful art lives on – on my walls and now through these drafts, on the walls of others as well.’
Print is unframed, 42 cm x 59.4 cm. Valued at $600. Donated by Dianne Wolfer.
