Sally Morgan artwork raffled for charity

Indigenous artist and author Sally Morgan is one of 16 artists participating in A Child is Born, an exhibition to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation at the Wesley Uniting Church in Perth this December.

Visitors can participate in a raffle to win a Sally Morgan original or can purchase a second artwork outright with all proceeds donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Morgan, who is an ambassador for the Foundation, said she jumped at the chance to use her creative talents to help children in remote Aboriginal communities.

‘I’ve been working with ILF for several years. The work they do makes a difference in the lives of children. They also support the publication of multi-lingual books, which are written and developed within communities,’ said Morgan.

‘This national initiative works with the publishing industry to supply books and culturally appropriate literacy materials to children with limited access to services and support,’ she said.

Morgan’s works, ‘Under a Different Star’ and ‘Bird’s Eye View’, are acrylic on canvas and feature a child and a bird on a hill respectively. The latter will be raffled on the last day of the exhibition.

A Child is Born brings together artworks in a timely celebration of the preciousness of the child and the importance of childhood, not only at Christmas but each and every day of the year.

The Rev. Don Dowling, Minister of the Wesley Uniting Church in the City said he hoped the exhibition would become a regular community event to raise awareness and funds for organisations dedicated to the health and well-being of Australian children.

Artists exhibiting alongside Morgan include; Hans Arkeveld, Christine Atkins, Denise Brown, Madeleine Clear, Rebecca Cool, Sue Cotton, Ian de Souza, Ruth de Vos, Jillian Green, Thomas Heidt, Robert Juniper, Alan Muller, Amanda Shelsher, John Teschendorff and Linda van der Merwe.

A Child is Born can be seen in Wesley Uniting Church in the City, corner of Hay and William Streets, Perth from Saturday 8 December to Sunday 16 December. The exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm, entry is free and all are welcome.

Sally Morgan is an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the author of many books for adults and children including My Place.
