Maling snags Dorothy Hewett Fellowship
Caitlin Maling has won the Dorothy Hewett Flagship Fellowship for her forthcoming poetry collection Us Girls. The fellowship is awarded for poetry of outstanding quality, in memory of Dorothy Hewett – a poet also published by Fremantle Press.
Maling was one of thirty people to receive a prestigious Varuna fellowship in 2016. She said the fellowship was significant because it gave her three uninterrupted weeks to work on her poetry.
‘It’s a dream. There’s so much amazing work being produced in Australia at the moment that I am honoured to be receiving it and to know my work has readers.
‘It feels great to get recognition for newer work, work that’s a little bit different, a bit edgier than Conversations I’ve never had,’ said Maling.
Western Australians can get an early taste of Maling’s next collection when she returns to her home state in January.
‘I will be testing out some new poems from my follow-up collection to Conversations I’ve never had with lots of poems about Western Australia but also some delving into my time in Texas and my thoughts on the US,’ said Maling.
Conversations I’ve never had is available now at all good bookstores and online. Us Girls is scheduled for publication in 2017. You can catch Maling at Voicebox on 25 January 2016 and the Perth Poetry Club on 30 January 2016. Watch this space for more details closer to the time.
