Black Swan bring Lighthouse Girl to the stage

The world premiere of Hellie Turner’s The Lighthouse Girl is set to take place in Albany, the birthplace of the much-loved Anzac story. Based on Dianne Wolfer’s acclaimed books, Lighthouse Girl and Light Horse Boy, the play will premiere at the Albany Entertainment Centre on 22 April before its Perth season at the State Theatre Centre of WA from 28 April to 14 May 2017.

Wolfer said she had met with Hellie Turner and really liked her adaptation of both stories.

‘It touches on both Lighthouse Girl and Light Horse Boy but has its own flavour and focus. It stays very true to the story and it’s interesting to see what other writers choose to highlight. I believe ticket sales are doing incredibly well,’ said Wolfer.

Black Swan Associate Director Stuart Halusz directs this gentle play, which entwines the lives of Fay and Charlie and brings to life the stories of those left at home during World War I and the struggles of courageous young men who enlisted to help defend their country.

Dianne Wolfer’s Lighthouse Girl was shortlisted for the 2009 NSW Premier’s History Awards and the WA Premier’s Book Awards, and won the 2010 West Australian Young Readers’ Book Award. Lighthouse Girl is now an ASLA recommended reading text for the National History Curriculum.
