Fremantle Press and Copyright Agency showcase new Australian authors to festival directors
With help from the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, more than fifty new and emerging Western Australian authors will have the opportunity to network with festival directors, event programmers, librarians and booksellers at the annual Fremantle Press Perth Festival Writers Week Breakfast.
Fremantle Press Marketing and Communications Manager Claire Miller said the event gave authors the chance to pitch themselves and their latest books to event organisers. She said, ‘Sometimes it’s the first time they have spoken in front of a large group, so it’s a great learning opportunity as well as a chance for them to make connections that might otherwise take years.
The Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund provides grants throughout the year to authors, artists, publishers and arts organisations for a diverse range of projects which aim to enrich Australian cultural life.
Copyright Agency CEO, Adam Suckling, said it was very important that writers received exposure to the industry as often as possible. ‘Writers are often isolated by the nature of their work and so they can get tremendous long-term benefits from industry introductions such as these.’
Miller said the support of the Cultural Fund had enabled Fremantle Press to invite more event organisers to participate and to extend the event’s reach.
‘The increased capacity has meant we’ve been able to invite authors from the Four Centres Emerging Writers Program. It’s going to be a fantastic way for them to learn from other writers and we hope it will provide invaluable insights into how event programmers operate in Western Australia,’ she said.
Fremantle Press Perth Festival Writers Week Breakfast takes place on Saturday 23 February at 9.30 am at the UWA Water Sports Centre. While all the author seats are fully booked, there are still four tickets remaining for festival directors, teachers, librarians and event programmers. To secure your ticket, contact event coordinator Jen Bowden at jbowden@fremantlepress.com.au or on 08 9430 6331.
The Copyright Agency is a not-for-profit rights management organisation that ensures artists, writers and publishers are fairly rewarded for the reproduction of their work.
