From Morse code to periscopes, Fremantle Press’s free WWI kit has plenty of activities to do at home with your kids this Anzac Day
Anzac Day marks the anniversary of Australia’s first major military action, and is also a national day of remembrance that commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
This Anzac Day is unlikely to be like those that came before. Though the dawn service and marches are cancelled in 2020, there are still ways to teach your kids about what Anzac Day really means. One is by reading an Anzac-themed book with them – and we’ve compiled a list for adults and kids alike here.
Another is to order or download our free WWI kit. It has activity sheets based on Dianne Wolfer’s In the Lamplight and Lighthouse Girl, and Norman Jorgensen’s In Flanders Fields. Kids will learn how to make a periscope, send each other messages in Morse code, and diagnose illnesses as WWI nurses once did.
Both Dianne and Norman have both kindly recorded videos for us about what Anzac Day means to them and you can also check out the book trailer for Light Horse Boy.
Order your activity kit from Fremantle Press at admin@fremantlepress.com.au while stocks last, or download them to print at home below.
