Narell Black on how sharing books can be enhanced by using conversational reading

Narell Black is the Principal Consultant for KindiLink in the Primary Early Childhood & Education Support Statewide Services. In this short read she shares her top tips for carers and parents on how to use their Bookaburras packs.
Conversational reading is a back-and-forth way of sharing books, where adults and children take turns talking, it is like a ‘serve and return’ game, it builds language, strengthens relationships, and helps children grow a lifelong love of reading
Why it helps children love books:
- It feels personal – Children feel seen and heard when they’re invited to share their thoughts.
- It builds confidence – They learn it’s okay to be curious, ask questions, express ideas and emotions.
- It deepens comprehension – They engage with the story more deeply because they’re actively thinking about it.
- It boosts language skills – Children hear new vocabulary and learn how language works through real conversation.
A few simple strategies:
- Pause, get joint attention and ask: “What do you see? ” or ” Can you show me the…… and What do you think will happen next?”
- Make connections: “Have you ever felt like that before?”
- Be playful: Use silly voices, act out parts, or guess what’s hiding on the next page.
- Encourage questions: “What do you think will happen next?”
- Let the child lead: Follow their interests — if they want to talk about their favourite PJ on the page, go with it!
