At the Fremantle Press Open Day, you can enjoy a tour of the building and hear from WA’s emerging arts and publishing professionals as they connect with Fremantle Press and our partner organisations across three industry panels. The panels will take place at Hybrid Warehouse at 5 Quarry Street, Fremantle, just across the road from Fremantle Press.

Program
A–Z of Publishing
10.00 am–11.00 am
Hybrid Warehouse, 5B Quarry Street, Fremantle
Go behind the scenes of an independent publisher and learn how books are made, from submitted manuscript to finished title on the shelf. Join publishers Rachel Bin-Salleh (Magabala Books), Kate Pickard (UWA Publishing), Cate Sutherland (Fremantle Press) and Terri-ann White (Upswell Publishing), alongside author Linda Martin, for a practical session designed for aspiring editors and publishing professionals, secondary and tertiary students, and writers who want a clearer understanding of how publishing really works. Facilitated by Georgia Richter (Fremantle Press).
How to Get a Job in Publishing
11.15 am–12.15 pm
Hybrid Warehouse, 5B Quarry Street, Fremantle
Curious about what it really takes to break into publishing? This session will take you through options for careers in the book industry.
Hear from Centre for Stories’ CEO Robert Wood, WA Penguin Random House Sales Account Manager Jane Parkhill, and Sean Cowan, Executive Editor at Business News, as they discuss the roles that are available in publishing, and how people are hired into them. The panel will cover the skills and experience that matters most, how to stand out in applications, and what entry-level pathways might look like. Facilitated by Georgia Richter.
From Page to Stage and Screen
12.30 pm–1.20 pm
Hybrid Warehouse, 5B Quarry Street, Fremantle
What special magic is required to take a story from its original book format into the worlds of theatre and television? That will be the subject of this panel session featuring Tania Chambers of Feisty Dame Productions and Sam Longley of Barking Gecko Arts. The pair will discuss their collaboration with authors on Invisible Boys and Stellarphant. Facilitated by James Foley.
Ask an Editor
1.10 pm–2.10 pm
1/10 Parry Street, Fremantle
Ever wanted to ask an editor what really makes a manuscript work, how submissions are assessed, or what happens after you sign a contract? Now’s your chance! Book a one-on-one, 10-minute Q&A with Fremantle Press editors Rachel Hanson and Kirsty Horton. Bring your questions including how editors and authors work together, what goes into creating a killer book cover, how books are printed, an overview of the publishing process and editorial consultancy, and receive honest, friendly advice from the professionals.
This session is not a manuscript assessment. If you have already submitted a manuscript to Fremantle Press, we can’t discuss it in this session.
