Meat the real star of the Fremantle Press Booktoberfest: The Fremantle Press Commemorative Sausage specially made in Freo and available for one night only

Marketing and Communications Manager Claire Miller has been dreaming of a Fremantle Press Commemorative Sausage ever since the company’s fortieth anniversary party in 2016. Now a local butcher has made her dream come true.

When Marketing and Communications Coordinator Jen Bowden called the legendary Frank Carbone, owner of Frank’s Gourmet Meats in Fremantle, to get a quote for bratwurst, he told her he could go one better and make a sausage especially for the Fremantle Press Great Big Booktoberfest Read and Hungerford Book Launch on Thursday 24 October. (Vegans and vegetarians, don’t think you’re missing out – we’ll have delicious options available for you on the night, too!)

When Jen passed the news on to the rest of the team, Claire was heard shouting gleefully up the stairs to Publisher Georgia Richter, ‘Georgia! We finally have our commemorative sausage!’ A resounding ‘yippee’ was the response.

Frank Carbone said, ‘When Jen called I immediately offered a custom-made option. I’ve had my butcher shop in Fremantle for over 30 years and I’m always delighted to work with local organisations and companies to help them make the best of their events, whether that be creating a special sausage or donating prizes for raffles and quizzes.’

The Fremantle Press Commemorative Sausage will be a beef sausage flavoured with smoky paprika evocative of the sultry tones of David Whish-Wilson, a pinch of pepper suggestive of the perky enthusiasm of Holden Sheppard, a seasoning of salt reminiscent of the sharp wit of Anne-Louise Willoughby, and a blend of herbs and flavours that represent the truly unique mix that is the Fremantle Press 2019 author list.

This locally made delicacy will be sizzled up by members of the City of Perth Concert Band, who will be fundraising at the event, while their colleagues in the City of Perth Brass Band will provide authentic oompah-style music to lend a real Oktoberfest feel to the evening.

Doors open at 6 pm at Fremantle Arts Centre. The event will start soon after, featuring readings from our children’s authors Moira Court from her book Antarctica, Helen Milroy from Wombat, Mudlark and Other Stories and HM Waugh from The Lost Stone of SkyCity.

Readings from our non-fiction authors will follow, with Megan Anderson’s Word of Dog, Anne-Louise Willoughby’s Nora Heysen: A Portrait and Philippa Nikulinsky’s Nikulinsky Unfolded: Xanthorrhoea.

Next you’ll hear our fiction authors reading from their latest novels, with Steve Hawke’s Out of Time and David Whish-Wilson’s crime thriller True West. The evening will conclude with the launch of the 2018 Hungerford Award winning novel, Invisible Boys, and a reading by author Holden Sheppard.
