Holden Sheppard’s YA novel Invisible Boys is the first book of the new Fremantle Book Club

Holden Sheppard’s multi-award-winning young adult novel Invisible Boys is the first book on the bill for the Fremantle Book Club, which kicked off this month.

The Fremantle Book Club was set up by the City of Fremantle and Fremantle Press as a community reading initiative to get anyone living, working, touring and studying in Freo to share the enjoyment of a single story. Keen readers can sign up to the book club’s Facebook and Goodreads groups, where there’ll be plenty of posts from Fremantle librarians and the participating authors about books, writing and reading.

There will also be an event with the chosen author each quarter and a 10% discount off the book at Fremantle bookstore New Edition. A free author talk with Holden in conversation with ABC Radio presenter Gillian O’Shaughnessy will be held on Saturday 7 March, 3–4.30 pm at Stackwood.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said Freo’s inaugural city-wide book club would support local authors, promote a culture of creativity in the community and connect like-minded literary fans.

‘It’s shaping up to be a fantastic communal reading experience, which will bring together people of all backgrounds and foster discussion around the books’ themes,’ Mayor Pettitt said. ‘I encourage anyone who loves local stories to join in on the fun.’

Fremantle Press Marketing and Communications Manager Claire Miller said, ‘It’s no secret we love being based in Fremantle. Through the Fremantle Book Club we hope to make deeper connections with local readers while sharing Fremantle’s trademark love of culture and storytelling with booklovers everywhere.

‘At Fremantle Press our passion for books knows no bounds so we’re looking forward to some robust online chats.’
