Celebrating a Life in Song, 10 Years On …

Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle will commemorate the ten-year anniversary of Triffids frontman David McComb’s passing at a musical tribute night this Thursday 5 February.

Niall Lucy, co-editor of the soon-to-be-released Triffids book, Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids, said Mojo’s Bar was a fitting place for Triffids songs to be played again.

“The band had a residency at Mojo’s Bar (then called The Stoned Crow) in their early days.

“Sometimes, in summer, they played in short pants! From the start they were always – not defiantly, but innately – different,” said Lucy.

David McComb died on 2 February 1999 just before his 37th birthday. His legacy continues to have a profound influence on quality, original, Australian music.

Event organiser robbie jalapeno said the tribute night was something that just had to be done.

“To me, Dave McComb is the best songwriter to come out of WA and this is one way for members of the local scene to give thanks.

“I knew the PIAF shows were going ahead, but the ten-year thing was only ever going to happen once,” said jalapeno who spoke to the Triffids to gain their support for the event.

Raising a glass to McComb on the night will be Matt De La Hunty and the Smokin’ Eldorados, Felicity Groom, Kevin Smith and the 7 Storey Jumpers, Selk Hastings and the Wild Free, Prita Grealy, Peter Baxendale and Russell Kingdom, Kim McDonald and robbie jalapeno. The night will be hosted by Alex Manfrin.

Vagabond Holes: David McComb and the Triffids is scheduled for release by Fremantle Press in September 2009 together with a collection of previously unseen poetry by David McComb. The book features contributions by ex-Triffids members, Nick Cave, Judith Lucy, Rob Snarski, Phil Kakulas, Julian Tompkin and many others as well as artworks, photos and ephemera.
