From groundbreaking book to groundbreaking series: Invisible Boys premieres on Stan

Adapted from the award-winning novel by Holden Sheppard, the powerful 10-part Stan Original Series Invisible Boys will premiere on 13 February, only on Stan.

To celebrate the series, a new edition of Holden Sheppard’s bestselling novel hits bookstores today.

Described by reviewers as a ‘groundbreaking new Aussie drama’ and a ‘powerful, soulful and absolutely bang-on LGBTQIA+ series’, the author praised the team responsible for bringing his book to the screen.

Holden said, ‘I’m stoked that the premiere of the Stan. Original Series of Invisible Boys is nearly here, and I am pumped to share it with viewers. This production does justice to the rawness and boldness of my punk gay novel and doesn’t pull a single punch doing it.’

Filmed in Perth and Geraldton, Invisible Boys is an emotional tale of individuality and belonging. Written for the screen by a team of queer writers, including a writing credit for Holden himself, the series is raw and authentic, depicting facets of gay sexuality often overlooked.

Holden said, ‘My hometown of Gero – and the rest of the Midwest – looks absolutely phenomenal on screen. Lead actors, Joseph, Aydan, Zach and Joe, have perfectly captured the essences of Charlie, Zeke, Hammer and Matt – better than I could ever have hoped for. To fans of the novel: get ready, it’s awesome.’

Invisible Boys won the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award in 2018 and was published by Fremantle Press in 2019, going on to become an Australian bestseller.

CEO Alex Allan said she was looking forward to watching the series. Allan said, ‘Bringing such an iconic and much-loved book to the screen has been a team effort with so many talented people involved nationally and internationally.  For me personally, and for Fremantle Press, it’s been extremely rewarding to see a truly Western Australian story receive such wonderful support from local funding partners, Screenwest, Lotterywest and the WA Regional Screen Fund and to know that Holden’s powerful story will reach a global audience. We are just so proud of what’s been achieved.’

The new edition of Invisible Boys is available now in all good bookstores and online. The Stan Original Series Invisible Boys will premiere 13 February, all episodes at once and only on Stan.
