The Book Builders Challenge is Here for WA Students

Local authors and illustrators are teaming up to deliver a unique and inspiring program that gives primary school students the chance to become real-life published authors. Under the tutelage of WA’s bestselling and award-winning creatives, Year 5 and 6 students from Collier, East Victoria Park, Kensington and Manning Primary Schools will write, illustrate, edit and publish their own books – from picture books and chapter books to graphic novels.
The Book Builders Challenge was created by local author Kristy Nita Brown, who ran the pilot project in 2024. Kristy said, ‘With recent NAPLAN results showing 1 in 3 students are falling below national literacy standards, Book Builders offers a creative, hands-on approach to engage students and boost their literacy and confidence. The 2024 pilot saw 82% of students publish a complete book, and 85% walk away with a better understanding of how publishing works. Teachers reported increased engagement, creativity, and motivation in the classroom. Students discovered the joy of writing – and the power of seeing their stories come to life.’
Students will collaborate directly with some of the best creatives in the industry, including Gabriel Evans, Kylie Howarth, HM Waugh and more. Their final works will be judged by Nat Amoore, RJ Timmis, James Foley and our own publishing team at Fremantle Press. The Book Builders Challenge will culminate with two student-led book launches, where they will sell their books to raise money for their schools.
CEO of Fremantle Press Alex Allan said, ‘We’re proud to support initiatives that empower young voices and help them discover their creative potential while building the love for stories and storytelling that’s essential for the development of literacy.’
This program is funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, with generous support from the Hon Hannah Beazley MLA, Mr Geoff Baker MLA, Acton Belle, Officeworks, Crow Books, Fremantle Press and The Literature Centre.
