Fremantle Press opens its doors to new publishing professionals

Fremantle Press is joining forces with UWA Publishing to host a 2026 Open Book Intern. The Open Book: Australian Publishing Internship is a paid internship designed to foster cultural diversity in Australian book publishing. It aims to provide a well-rounded introduction to the industry and create practical and sustainable pathways towards long-term careers for aspiring professionals.
Fremantle Press CEO and APA Independent Publishers Committee (IPC) convenor Alex Allan said the internship was a boost for the WA publishing industry. She said, ‘Opportunities to break into the tiny but mighty industry here are few. We’re excited about working with our colleagues at UWA Publishing to provide a broad range of experience across the gamut of publishing.’
Successful applicants will gain experience in editorial, production, sales and distribution, and marketing and publicity. Alex said, ‘This internship comes at a time when we have a heightened awareness of how difficult it has been to offer these kinds of positions in the past, due to a lack of space. The Open Book intern will join us at our newly renovated home in Parry Street, which is an accessible space with a dedicated desk for interns in every department.’
The Open Book Perth Placement will be held as follows:
Placement 1: Mon 25 May–Friday 31 July – UWA Publishing
Placement 2: Mon 10 August–Fri 16 October – Fremantle Press
Applications are strongly encouraged from people from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. While the internship is an entry-level position, Open Book does not equate this with youth or inexperience, and there is no upper age limit for applicants. Of the available internships in 2026 (across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane), one is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.
Applications for the 2026 Open Book internship are now open: https://www.openbookinternship.org/2026-program
Applications closing date: 5pm, Monday 23 March 2026
Open Book: Australian Publishing Internship has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
