Fremantle Press shortlisted for Australian Book Industry Award in lead-up to 50th birthday

Fremantle Press is celebrating 50 years of independent publishing with a brand-new home and a place on the Australian Book Industry Awards shortlist.

The ABIA Small Publisher of the Year Award recognises publishers whose program demonstrates excellence, thereby contributing to the overall success of the industry.

Fremantle Press CEO Alex Allan said the shortlisting was the icing on the cake after learning that the Nock Loose by Patrick Marlborough and Ningaloo by Tim Winton with Cindy Lane, had also been shortlisted in their respective ABIA categories. Alex said, ‘Not only do we get to commemorate our golden anniversary in a purpose-built home, but we do so knowing that our peers recognise that Fremantle Press, and our books, are of national importance. It’s a special moment for us.’

Almost 300 people have secured tickets to the Fremantle Press Gala Anniversary on Friday 24 April. Theatre 180 is producing the event, part of which will take place in Circus WA’s new space. Alex said Fremantle Press was ready to celebrate. She said, ‘Showcasing storytelling in all its forms is at the heart of what each organisation is all about. I think it’s amazing what the arts can accomplish when we work together.

Fremantle Press is housed at the historic SEC Substation at 1/10 Parry Street – a place that is accessible, visible and one where there is room to grow.

Places are still available for the Community Open Day on Friday 24 April. Guided tours are by gold coin donation, commencing from 9.45 am at 1/10 Parry Street, with the last tour ending at 1.45 pm. Fremantle Press books and merchandise will be available for sale throughout the day.

The Australian Book Industry Awards celebrate excellence and innovation from the teams and individuals across the industry who get books into the hands of readers – from authors and artists to publishers, editors, marketers and booksellers.

Nock Loose and Ningaloo: Australia’s Wild Wonder are available from all good bookstores and online.
