Tim Winton picture book shortlisted for two major industry prizes

Ningaloo: Australia’s Wild Wonder by Tim Winton with Cindy Lane has been shortlisted for an Australian Book Industry Award and an Australian Booksellers Association Award in as many days.

The ABA Book of the Year Awards are for titles which have captured the hearts of Australian booksellers – those titles they most like recommending. The ABIAs are presented by Books + Publishing in partnership with the Australian Publishers Association.

Commissioned by Fremantle Press CEO Alex Allan, Ningaloo takes young readers on a deep dive into an area of international significance – one of the last great wild regions on earth. Winton’s vast knowledge is condensed into an engaging and readable text showing generations to come how to protect and care for it. Cindy Lane’s illustrations show why Ningaloo is a captivating and extraordinary place to visit.

Alex Allan said she was moved when she discovered peers and industry experts from around Australia had shortlisted the book. Alex said, ‘We all want to make a genuine impact through the stories we tell and the connections we make between authors and readers. The work that our colleagues do inspires us every day – so we’re proud to have been recognised by them in return and to have a book on our list that represents Western Australia in such a powerful and far-reaching way.’

Ningaloo was shortlisted in the ABA Kids’ Reading Guide Children’s Book of the Year category. It was shortlisted in the Small Publishers’ Children’s Book of the Year category in the ABIAs alongside Nock Loose by Patrick Marlborough in the Small Publishers’ Fiction Book of the Year category.

News of the honour came through just days before Fremantle Press celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday 24 April.
