Vale David Hutchison
Fremantle Press extends its condolences to the family and friends of local historian and writer David Hutchison, who passed away at 90 years of age on Wednesday 27 December 2017.
The Fremantle History Society reports that its president, Professor Bob Reece, described David as ‘one of those rare people we can call a true authority on Fremantle and its history’. David brought the city to life in his book Fremantle Walks (Fremantle Press, 2006), a rich compendium that delighted residents and tourists alike. It was dedicated to ‘Fremantle and the many friends who share it with me and my wife, June.’
David also contributed a fictionalised account of his 1930s childhood to the 2011 anthology The Kid on the Karaoke Stage and Other Stories. These were just two of many publications in a long career that included articles, poetry, a novella and botanical illustrations. David’s writing was always imbued with gentle charm and a capacity for acute observation.
The funeral service will take place at 10 am on Thursday 4 January 2018 in the Bowra & O’Dea chapel in Hilton. Donations in David’s name can be made to Bush Heritage Australia in lieu of flowers.
David has done much to preserve the story of our city. He will be missed.
