State member for Fremantle and local councillor help launch new travel memoir by Jay Martin
City of Fremantle T.A.G. Hungerford Award winner for 2016 Jay Martin will launch her book Vodka and Apple Juice this Tuesday 4 September at The Local Hotel in South Fremantle.
The event, run in conjunction with the City of Fremantle Library, will be hosted by Councillor Hannah Fitzhardinge and will see Jay in conversation with the Hon. Simone McGurk MLA.
Martin said, ‘You type away for years – literally – and then all of a sudden you win the Hungerford! It seems so perfect that the City of Fremantle – where I made my home since returning from Poland – was the sponsor for this award and that we’re running this launch in conjunction with them.
‘I don’t think it’s any accident that four of five of the finalists for the 2016 Hungerford award (picked entirely anonymously) come from this place, this place that lives its story every day and makes you want to be part of it.’
Vodka and Apple Juice is subtitled Travels of an Undiplomatic Wife in Poland and follows Jay’s time spent living in Warsaw while her husband worked there as an Australian diplomat. Part memoir, part travelogue, this is an original and funny exploration of Poland and its people, as well as the trials and tribulations that come with sharing life with a diplomatic.
The City of Fremantle T.A.G. Hungerford Award is a biennial prize presented to an emerging Western Australian writer for their first full-length, unpublished work of fiction or narrative non-fiction. Winners receive $12,000 from the City and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press.
The event is free, but booking is essential. Tickets are available at: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/vodka-and-apple-juice-book-launch-tickets-48265092190#tickets.
