Maling wins Harri Jones Memorial Prize

‘Border Crossing’ by Fremantle Press poet Caitlin Maling has won the 2014 Harri Jones Memorial Prize, a division in the 2014 Newcastle Poetry Prize.

Coordinated by the Hunter Writers Centre and supported by the University of Newcastle, the Harri Jones Memorial Prize is awarded to the best poem by a poet under 35 years.

Caitlin said she was ‘chuffed’ to receive the prize and that the $250 prize money will help to fund her love of poetry books.

‘’Border Crossing’ is a long sequence poem about travelling through the US with my family,’ said Caitlin.

Caitlin is now looking forward to the launch of her debut collection Conversations I’ve Never Had, which will be released by Fremantle Press in July 2015.

‘The collection covers a large range of topics but at heart is about growing up in the landscape of Western Australia, so I would say it would appeal to anyone with a connection to Australian spaces and of course anybody interested in poetry,’ said Caitlin.

‘Border Crossing’ was announced as winner of the Harri Jones Memorial Prize on Saturday 25 October at A Day of Poetry at the Delaney Hotel in Newcastle.
