Profiling The Literature Centre

Based within the walls of the old Fremantle Prison, The Literature Centre has been nurturing young people’s interest in reading and writing since 1993. The Centre works with over 30,000 students each year in metropolitan, rural and regional areas of Western Australia. Alongside their work as champions of children’s book creators, they run open days for the public and an annual national conference. They are an essential and unique part of Australia’s cultural landscape. We asked founder and director Leslie Reece to give us the highlights of their 2016 program.

The Sound of Picture Books featuring Tree by Danny Parker and Matt Ottley will be on during 13–17 June. Our innovative multi-modal workshop features the story, illustrations and music of a picture book and it’s attracting a lot of interest. It will be our third year of presenting this unique performance piece.

On 28–29 October, we will be hosting the fifth Celebrate Reading National Conference. This year will have a secondary school focus. Our outstanding all-Australian line-up includes Markus Zusak, Libby Hathorn, Nick Earls, Scot Gardner, Archie Fusillo, Maureen McCarthy, Lili Wilkinson, James Moloney, Deb Fitzpatrick and Dianne Touchell. With no concurrent sessions and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere delegates can expect two days of inspiration, learning and laughs!

The Literature Centre always enjoys profiling quality books for children and young adults produced by Fremantle Press, and contracting their authors to participate in our many and varied programs throughout the state. For details on any of our upcoming events visit our website www.thelitcentre.org.au.
