Kyle Hughes-Odgers mural machine

Kyle Hughes-Odgers, illustrator of Ten Tiny Things and author and illustrator of On a Small Island, is a hot commodity on the local and international art scene.

Right on the heels of completing his giant Perth Airport mural last month, Kyle has taken part in the creation of impressive public artworks.

In Melbourne, he completed a public mural in Barkly Square, a new shopping centre in Brunswick that has turned a curated laneway into a public art space.

He also participated in a live painting weekend in Sydney as part of Project Five. Alongside other artists and in front of a live audience, Kyle spent two days creating artwork that will be auctioned off on 29 October with all proceeds being donated to charity.

‘It was good to be involved with projects at Barkly Square in Melbourne and Project Five in Sydney. Both events have been great experiences,’ said Kyle.

‘I have also just signed the contract for my next book with Fremantle Press, which I will start sketching images for on the long flights to the US!’ said Kyle.

Kyle said his next project is a solo exhibition featuring his new artwork at C.A.V.E. Gallery in Los Angeles, where he will also paint a large public mural for the opening on 11 October.

Kyle will then head to Washington DC to take part in the Richmond Mural Project on 17–31 October.

‘I have been commissioned to paint an entire building in Washington DC alongside ten other abstract artists from around the world, all painting a building each,’ said Kyle.

‘It’s a busy and exciting time. I can’t wait to start painting!’ said Kyle.

On a Small Island is available in all good bookstores and online. Kyle’s C.A.V.E. Gallery solo exhibition runs from 11 October to 1 November. Washingtonians can see Kyle working on the Richmond Mural Project from 17 to 31 October. The rest of us can check out his work online:
