Crow Books helps debut author raise money for 100 Women at the launch of Small Steps: A Physio in Ethiopia
Small Steps: A Physio in Ethiopia by Julie Sprigg will be launched by fellow Fremantle Press non-fiction writer Anne-Louise Willoughby at 6.30 pm on Thursday 10 September at the Balmoral Hotel. Supported by Crow Books, Julie, who is based in Victoria Park, will use the event as an opportunity to raise money for the not-for-profit organisation 100 Women. The $5 cover charge will be donated to the organisation, which has a mission to help everyday people create a world where women and girls can live safely and have access to health, education and economic freedom.
Julie said she was delighted to raise funds for an organisation which pools the resources of philanthropically minded women to increase their overall impact and was looking forward to welcoming a representative from the organisation to say a few words on the night. Julie said, ‘One of the most valuable life lessons I learnt from my time in Ethiopia is there are no simple solutions to complex problems. When I set out I was idealistic and filled with conviction the world could be a better place if only everyone tried harder. But the longer I stayed I saw how complicated the factors are that contribute to the world’s inequalities and I realised there’s only so much each of us can do. As the title of my book suggests, sometimes it’s about the small steps.’
Small Steps was shortlisted for the 2018 City of Fremantle Hungerford Award. Set in the early 2000s, the memoir follows Julie’s experiences working as a physiotherapist in Ethiopia. Julie’s story starts in the capital city, Addis Ababa, volunteering as a physiotherapist for children with disabilities, and ends in a northern town called Gondar, where Julie teaches at a local university hospital in the country’s first physiotherapy degree.
100 Women describes itself as a collaborative giving circle that transforms the lives of women and girls. The organisation gathers people from all walks of life to harness the power of collective giving, funding life-changing projects to improve the lives of women and girls globally.
