Fremantle Press announces opening date and new judges for the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award

Now’s the time for Western Australian writers to add the final touches to their manuscripts! Opening on 3 February 2022, the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award is for an unpublished work of adult fiction, narrative non-fiction or young adult fiction by an unpublished writer. The winner receives a cash prize of $15,000 and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press.

Fremantle Press publisher Georgia Richter said local writers should be marking the opening and closing dates in their diaries. She said, ‘Writers who wish to enter have less than five months to complete and polish their manuscripts. Now is the time to start final revisions and ask is my manuscript the best that it can be?’ Judged anonymously, a panel of three judges decide on a longlist, from which Richter selects a shortlist and the winner. And in 2022 Fremantle Press will welcome two new judges to the Hungerford panel. Richter said, ‘Author and editor Richard Rossiter will be joined by Rashida Murphy and Natasha Lester. Natasha is a former Hungerford winner and New York Times bestselling author, and Rashida is a novelist, mentor and facilitator. Each brings unique perspectives and sensibilities to the role, but all share the desire to find good stories delivered with confidence and flair.’

In 2022, Western Australia’s most prestigious award for an unpublished work will celebrate its 31st year. The competition will open on 3 February and close on 20 March 2022. The winner will be announced in October 2022. For the full terms and conditions, or to browse books by previous winners, go to the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award page.
