Four of five books shortlisted for the Premier’s Emerging Writers prize are by Fremantle Press authors

Fremantle Press authors Chemutai Glasheen, Mark Greenwood, John Kinsella, Julia Lawrinson, Molly Schmidt, Laurie Steed, Michael Thomas, Georgia Tree, Dianne Wolfer and Emma Young have all been recognised in the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards 2024 Shortlist.

Fremantle Press publisher Georgia Richter said she was particularly delighted to see so many of our new authors represented on the Premier’s Prize for an Emerging Writer shortlist. Georgia said, ‘The stories in Chemutai Glasheen’s I Am the Mau draw on the author’s African background, with all its richness, diversity and complexity. Michael Thomas’s The Map of William is a gorgeous coming of age tale about a 15-year-old boy, travelling north in 1909 into grave danger and glorious adventure. Old Boy by Georgia Tree is the memoir of a boy growing up in Perth on the wrong side of the tracks, who can’t believe he survived long enough to tell his story to his daughter. Salt River Road by Molly Schmidt tells the unforgettable and heartwarming tale of the Tetley kids – a story of reconciliation and healing.’

The WA Premier’s Book Awards are an annual event recognising excellence and exceptional works by Western Australian authors and illustrators. The winners will be announced on 7 June 2024 at the State Library of Western Australia with category prizes of $15,000 for winners and $60,000 for the Fellowship recipient.

Fremantle Press CEO Alex Allan said, ‘We wish those of our authors who are in the running for the awards all the best in what will surely be a very difficult decision for the judges.’
