Fremantle Press YA diversity anthology launched at the Wheeler Centre

Meet Me at the Intersection will be launched at the Wheeler Centre on Tuesday 11 September. Edited by Ambelin Kwaymullina and Rebecca Lim, the book is an anthology of young adult writing that brings together a diverse range of short fiction, memoir and poetry by authors who are First Nations, People of Colour, LGBTIQA+ or living with disability.

Kwaymullina, who will also give a Wheeler Centre talk about love, trauma and Aboriginal women’s stories on Wednesday 12 September, said, ‘It matters that all stories are heard and that all stories have an equal opportunity to be heard.’

Kwaymullina will be joined at the launch by co-editor Rebecca Lim and contributors Jessica Walton and Ellen van Neerven. Lim said, ‘Our anthology is one tiny drop in a huge bucket demanding to be filled. It exists to give non-mainstream teen readers an acknowledgment that they aren’t invisible and that their stories – as divergent from “the norm” as they might be – are welcome and have a place in our monolithic, largely monocultural publishing landscape. It also exists to challenge the idea that there is no “market” for stories like these. We are all the market.’

With works by Ellen van Neerven, Graham Akhurst, Kyle Lynch, Ezekiel Kwaymullina, Olivia Muscat, Mimi Lee, Jessica Walton, Kelly Gardiner, Rafeif Ismail, Yvette Walker, Amra Pajalic, Melanie Rodriga, Omar Sakr, Wendy Chen, Jordi Kerr, Rebecca Lim, Michelle Aung Thin and Alice Pung, this anthology is designed to challenge the dominant, homogenous story of privilege and power that rarely admits ‘outsider’ voices.
