Melville Storylines program this year contains a bevy of Fremantle Press authors including YA dystopia from Brendan Ritchie, a panel dedicated to the Fogarty Literary Award allumni, and a launch of the Spinning Around: The Kylie Playlist.

On Saturday 6 October at AH Bracks Library + Creative Space Brendan Ritchie will feature the dystopian YA series Carousel and Beyond Carousel in a panel dedicated to Perth-based speculative fiction. Originally published in 2014 and 2015 respectively, Brendan says he hopes the new generation of readers will find comfort in this beloved series. Brendan says ‘There’s a real sense of fantasy and darkness in these books that can be an exciting place to explore. I also hope that readers might find something that speaks to them personally in the journey of the four characters within. In many ways, Nox, Taylor, Lizzy and Rocky couldn’t be any more different. Yet, like most of us, they’re all just doing their best to find their place within a dynamic and shifting world.’ Brendan will join Jess Gately, along with Madeline Te
Whiu and Juliet Marillier for this session. Details of the Flight of Fantasy panel can be found: here.

On Tuesday 15 October at Civic Square Library a special panel tailored around the Fogarty Literary Award will take place. To Fogarty and Beyond will feature 2023 winner Katherine Allum and two fellow shortlisted authors, Karleah Olson and Josh Kemp with host, and 2021 winner, Brooke Dunnell. The panellists will share their experience on the biennial award to a Western Australian writer aged between 18 and 35. The Fogarty Foundation recently announced a 73% funding increase for WA’s Young Writers which you can read the full details of: here. Details for To Fogarty and Beyond panel can be found: here.

Melville Storylines will conclude on Thursday 31 October at AH Bracks Library + Creative Space with a special event launching Spinning Around: The Kylie Playlist with contributors Andrea Thompson and Patrick Marlborough. The evening will be a glittering Kylie-fest with readings by the contributors and special guest Gillian O’Shaugnessy and the music of Kylie Minogue to celebrate. Details of the Spinning Around book launch at Melville Storylines can be found: here.

Melville Storylines will run from 1–31 October 2024 and the full program can be found: here.
