Make semaphore flags and send a message to a friend in this Lighthouse Girl-inspired activity

Bring the new edition of Lighthouse Girl by Dianne Wolfer (illustrated by Brian Simmonds) to life with a hands-on activity inspired by the way people once communicated across distances: semaphore.
In this free activity, students will make their own pair of flags, learn the semaphore alphabet and use it to send messages to a partner. It’s a great activity for Years 4–8 studying History, Geography and HASS.
Using our free teaching notes, you can continue to explore Lighthouse Girl with activities and discussion questions:
- Read the ‘About Fay’ section at the back of the book. Create a table with the headings ‘Fact’ and ‘Fiction’ to list the elements of the book that are historically accurate and those that Dianne Wolfer changed/created for the story.
- Fay pastes a black feather in her diary. Later in the war, white feathers have a special significance. What is it?
- What is the Leeuwin Current?
