With the 2019 Fogarty Literary Award announcement looming, we thought it’d be a good idea to bring in one of our shortlisted authors, Emma Young, for a chat about her manuscript The Last Bookshop.

In the podcast, Emma talks to Marketing and Communications Manager Claire Miller about the inspiration behind her story and in particular the character of Kate who owns the last bookshop in Perth. She discusses bookshop crazies and how a story in The Monthly helped shaped Kate’s personality. In the excerpt she reads, Kate visits an older book client who challenges and inspires her to tackle the challenges of the new world head on.

Emma is an award-winning digital journalist for Nine’s WAtoday, specialising in science and environment, urban planning and development, and social affairs. Her six WA Media Awards include the 2018 Matt Price Award for Best Commentary and she is also a book review blogger. As an emerging writer of fiction, Emma was selected for the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writer’s Centre 1st Edition Retreat in 2018 and for the inaugural Four Centres Emerging Writers Program for 2018 to 2019.

The inaugural winner of the Fogarty Literary Award will be announced as part of the next Fremantle Press Great Big Book Read at ECU’s Spiegeltent, 6 pm on Wednesday 22 May 2019. Tickets are free, but places are limited. RSVP to the event on Eventbrite or by emailing
